Director

Andrew Schmid is an energy economist and director of the Institute for Sustainability and Energy (ISE), where he focuses on energy and climate policy and the resulting effects on emissions, energy costs, and industrial competitiveness.
He has over a decade of experience in the energy sector, including as Head of Strategic Development at ČEZ, a top-10 European energy company. His work has spanned most of the energy system, including virtually all forms of power generation, gas, heat, energy storage, mining, biofuels and biomass, and energy services, with several years focused on renewable energy.
As an energy consultant, his work has ranged from helping launch a Central European renewable development business to serving as acting CEO of a crowdfunded distributed energy startup.
Earlier in his career, he worked in consulting at McKinsey and BCG, as well as in private equity, with experience across energy and other industrial sectors. He holds degrees from Harvard University and the University of Chicago and taught his own classes in microeconomics and related subjects at the university level.
Andrew’s work combines energy-sector experience with economic analysis to identify significant opportunities to reduce emissions and energy costs while improving energy security. These insights underpin much of the institute’s work, including its forthcoming flagship study.
Andrew writes and publishes commentary and analysis on energy and economic policy.
